Ukraine to build Storm Shadow

Bit of a slow news week this week - it’s as if something else has been happening - this really shouldn’t take you very long at all

So this is quite a big bit of news if you’re into your Eastern flanks. Kyiv has been granted licences by France to build the Scalp-EG - which is basically the same thing as the British Storm Shadow.

This is a big deal because it means Ukraine is developing their sovereign precision-guided capability…fast.

A few questions remain over whether Britain actually signed off on this, or whether the French just cracked on regardless.

Burnham has become the first Prime Minister (basically) to turn down the opening ceremony of the world famous Farnborough Air Show since the Second World War.

Why does anyone care? Well, one of Britain’s only industrial success stories - the defence sector - will be very worried if the new guy isn’t taking an active interest in their success.

Argentina has really been going for it recently with The Falklands. From calling it an illegal occupation earlier in the week, then accusing a Royal Naval ship of an incursion into Argentine waters yesterday…it was pretty unimpressive to see the Argentine football team mincing about with flag last night which said: Las Malvinas son Argentinas - which, I think, translates directly as The Malvern Hills have sons called Tina.

Weird thing to write.

The French got suitably angry about the state of their economy and stormed the Bastille fortress in Paris, kicking off the French Revolution.

Fun fact: despite its fearsome reputation as a symbol of royal tyranny, the mob broke in to find the prison only contained seven inmates. Still, it gave them a good excuse for a massive military parade every year.
