CDS: your children must be ready for the fight

Different century, same bear
The CDS didn’t pull any punches the other day when he said Britain must be prepared to lose sons and daughters to the fight with Russia. Defence is going to be a national effort and soon “more families will know what sacrifice for our nation means”. He was essentially firing a warning shot at an increasingly soft nation, telling it to wake up and understand that the 35 years of relative peace we’ve enjoyed since the end of the Cold War look increasingly fragile.
Good on ’im.

Government chinned off military protocol to give Marine top SF job

Definitely the right email boss?
A few months back, a confusing email arrived in the inbox of General Hockenhull, then Head of Special Operations. It came from Defence Secretary John Healey, congratulating a geezer called Lt General Sir Rob Magowan on landing the job of…Head of Special Operations - the same pid Hockenhull currently occupied.
Unsurprisingly, Hockenhull was slightly put out by this news and accused the government of chinning off protocol and trying to parachute ‘their man’ in his role. Magowan, meanwhile, thought he was in the money - until he wasn’t - after Healey backtracked. He was, by all accounts, also absolutely raging.
Anyway, in a massive plot twist, it sounds like there may be a happy ending, with Magowan about to be re-offered the job officially this time.
Russia announced MI6 and GRU bosses are chatting
Spooks at the GRU (Russian secret services) claimed this week that the new boss of MI6, Blaise Metreweli, and her Russian counterpart, Sergei Naryshkin, have been having “lengthy conversations”.
Now this is a strange thing to announce, given that these sorts of conversations are literally never discussed publicly. Someone clearly has an agenda - but you can be sure MI6 won’t be giving us anything to work with.

11th December 1941: Germany declares war on US

Declaration of war being announced
On 11 December 1941, just four days after Pearl Harbour, Germany declared war on the United States. This turned out to be a bad call. Until that moment, Germany had no obligation to fight America - but chose to anyway, convinced the U.S. lacked the will for a European war.
The declaration unified American public opinion overnight. From that point on, Germany wasn’t just fighting Britain and the Soviet Union - it was fighting most of the industrialised world.

Royal Veterinary Corps tasked with conscripting household pets for war effort
ALDERSHOT – The Royal Veterinary Corps is reportedly assessing the feasibility of conscripting household pets, following comments from the CDS that British citizens must be prepared to sacrifice more for their country.
According to a leaked briefing, recruitment teams are initially targeting “breeds with proven loyalty”, including Labradors, German Shepherds and anything that responds to a whistle.
The MOD was unavailable for comment.
