TOP STORY THIS WEEK

Are front line horses set for a comeback?

How do we do battle again?

No, HCav - Hyde Park isn’t the front line.

The last cavalry charge took place in the World War I (which actually seems pretty wild if you think about it), but the Army has recently started flirting with horses returning to legit operational roles.

Well known for their ability to traverse difficult terrain, a recent exercise on Barossa Training Area (behind RMA Sandbags) saw troopers navigating some of Surrey’s most savage terrain.

Lt Col McNeil explained: “A cavalryman is platform-centric, whatever that platform is.” Love that.

SAS associations brand government a disgrace

The “witch hunt” story isn’t going anywhere. Now, veterans’ associations representing the special forces have joined the fight - with some hard-hitting comments.

In a letter to MPs, the associations branded the Northern Ireland bill a “national disgrace” that is leading to veterans being “relentlessly persecuted”.

One soldier has even reportedly made an attempt on his life.

General: National Service must come back

Yet another call from yet another bigwig to bring back military service.

This time, Lord Robertson, the former Labour defence secretary who authored the UK’s defence review, has called on the government to face facts and table National Service as a solution to one of the many problems facing the British military.

He also accused Keir Starmer’s government of “corrosive complacency” towards defence…ouch.

THIS WEEK IN HISTORY

Big events from the past, covered in brief and probably inaccurately.

2nd May 1945: Fall of Berlin

Getting to real endgame territory in WW2 now.

Surrounded and broken, the German Army in Berlin was largely cut off from the outside world by April 1945. On 2nd May, General Helmuth Weidling, commander of the Berlin Defence Area, surrendered to Lieutenant-General Vasily Chuikov, commander of the Soviet 8th Guards Army in Berlin, thus setting the conditions for the end of the war in Europe.
