Israeli reserve first model starting to creak

Around 60% of Israel’s military are reservists, giving it the ability to rapidly scale without the burden of a large regular force. For the most part this is an effective model, but with 60,000 more reservists set to be called up next month - bringing the active total to 130,000 - questions are emerging over how much more can be asked of them. All this against the backdrop of a growing refusal movement.
The Royal Navy has been testing an unmanned speedboat built by Kraken Technology as it turns to autonomous options amid its recruitment crisis. The K3 Scout can be deployed virtually, reach speeds of 60mph and be used as a launchpad for attack drones or air defence systems. This comes amid a flurry of investment into robotics as militaries worldwide reassess the benefit of troops being deployed to do work that can be undertaken by machines.
IN THE MEDIA
Turning Point: The Vietnam War
We’re slightly late to the party on this one, but this mini-series from Netflix is seriously deserving of a mention. As we pass the 50 year mark since the fall of Saigon, Turning Point does an impressive job of giving a balanced account of one of the major conflicts of the ‘post-war’ era.
THIS WEEK IN HISTORY
Big events from the past, covered in brief and probably inaccurately.
27th August 1776: The Battle of Long Island

Just weeks after declaring independence, the young United States faced its first major trial. On 27 August 1776, British General William Howe led more than 20,000 troops against George Washington’s 10,000-strong Continental Army in Brooklyn in what was to become the largest battle of the Revolutionary War. Outnumbered and poorly trained, the Americans were outflanked through Jamaica Pass and their lines quickly collapsed, with hundreds killed or captured.
Amid the chaos, the “Maryland 400” made repeated charges that slowed the British advance and allowed most of Washington’s army to escape. Days later, Washington completed a daring nighttime evacuation across the East River under (what many Americans viewed as Divinely initiated) cover of fog. Though a clear British victory, the survival of the Continental Army meant the revolution itself lived to fight another day.

Government Denies Asking Army Recruitment for Help With Asylum Claims
LONDON - The Home Office has supposedly denied reports it contacted Army Recruitment for advice on clearing the asylum backlog, insisting “we’ve got this.”
Rumours emerged last week of a plan to scale the military mantra “you apply – we deny” across government departments were dismissed by officials as “wildly unhelpful.”
The MOD declined to comment.
